No, they’re not watches wearing dresses.

Most people would argue that a dress watch is a watch with a leather strap, and no complications but the time. Are they right?

Dress watch are mostly worn with suits, tuxedos and dinner jacket hence them being named “dress watches”. A dress watch is supposed to be elegant, simple and clean. But not necessarily with a leather strap. You see many great movie Icons wearing different kinds of watches with their suits, for example James Bond (Played by Daniel Craig) wears different Omega Seamasters in the movies of the series. John Wick (Played by Keanu Reeves) wears a simple Carl F. Bucherer Manero Autodate in stainless steel. And so on, people in suits are supposed to wear watches that suits the suit.

So it’s up to us to define a dress watch, whatever your opinion on what would be elegant, simple and clean is what should be the watch you pair with your suit.

If you want some of my suggestions, here are some of my favorite dress watches:

  • Rolex Cellini
  • Jaeger Le-Courtle Reverso
  • Carl F. Bucherer Manero Autodate
  • Patek Philippe Calatrava
  • Vacheron Constantin Historiques
  • Rolex Datejust (Jubilee bracelet + fluted bezel)
