The most controversial of the three, the Patek Philippe ref. 5303r-001 is a minute repeating masterpiece. First detail to notice about this watch is that it has a skeletonized dial, which is uncommon when it comes to Patek Philippe watches. The controversial part however, is not that it is skeletonized, but rather that the tourbillon is visible through the dial. Patek Philippe watches are admired for their subtilty and their under-the-radar feel, despite being fine pieces made with great craftsmanship, and exposing the tourbillon has defied that rule.
The case of the 5303r-001 is a whole story on its own, it has beautifully engraved 18ct white gold pieces attached to the 18ct rose gold case which technically speaking, makes it a two tone watch. The watch is not a small one, being 42mm in diameter and and 12.13mm in height. It is only dust and humidity resistant, not fully water resistant which is expected for a highly complicated watch with many details and engravings and the minute repeater’s slide, plus it is on a leather strap so there is no reason to get it into water. Speaking of leather, the strap is a handsome semi-glossy alligator leather strap, which is hand stitched precisely. As a cherry on top, you get a lovely 18ct rose gold fold over clasp with the Patek Philippe Calatrava cross prominently displayed.
The watch does have the Patek Philippe seal, meaning it’s accuracy is -3/+2 which is excellent. The sapphire crystal in front is UV protected. It is a manual wind movement with no less than 40 hours of power reserve, and no greater than 48 hours. Patek Philippe does recommend that the watch gets wound every day at the same time.
Overall, one can easily appreciate the intricacy of the craftsmanship put into this masterpiece. Even if the design or the idea behind the watch might challenge the taste of some
collectors, it is the craftsmanship that sets Patek Philippe on their throne. What do you think of the 5303r? And if you do own one, please share your story!
